Carnethy Run

We went out for an impromptu Carnethy Junior run on New Years Eve. Quickly discovered that Hannah wasn't on great form and we needed to take a short route back to the car. Max did well and went round the full course.

In the evening we walked into town to see the bright lights of Princes Street. Saw the various funfairs and a few bands started playing on the various stages. Had a pancake each before heading home.

Watched Mr Bean's Holiday in the evening.

Better at last !

Hannah finally recovered from her prolonged illness. She was up before Colin and had eaten 5 Weetabix before he had stirred from his bed.

With the central heating still not fixed (and no prospect until next Monday) we went to Warrender Baths for a swim and a wash in warm water. Bumped into Alexander and Hazel at the pool.

Later we went up Arthurs seat. A clear but cold and windy afternoon. Hannah was not in the mood and took some persuading.

Boxing Day Run

We all went out to Beecraigs country park. Colin took part in the run around the park. Max had a short walk and Hannah left the car for a few minutes before scurrying back to the warmth of the car. No sign of getting back to good health yet.

Race results to follow.

Quick walk up to the summit of Allermuir. Hoping for snow on the peaks but it was all very clear but cold.

Sunday, December 16, 2007

Eskapade

Colin joined the annual Carnethy club run along the River Esk from Musselburgh to the source of the river. Cut short at Penicuik which was plenty after 4 1/2 hours of running on a fine but bitterly cold morning.

Max was playing with the Harp ensemble at the School Concert on Wednesday night.

Harps of Gold

Another busy weekend although somewhat clouded by Hannah going down with a very nasty bug that put her out of action for most of the weekend. Cherry has a sale at Marchmont St Giles on Saturday morning. Max had harp practice on Saturday and Sunday morning and then the big concert at the Queens Hall on Sunday afternoon.

Glasgow 3 Parks Championships

A busy weekend for everyone. Cherry has two Magicwardrobe sales on Saturday. Hannah had two fair and a birthday party. Max went to the fair on Saturday morning and harp rehearsal in the afternoon.

Max and Colin went to the Glasgow 3 Parks Orienteering Championship. We visited Pollok Park, Tollcross Park and Cathkin Braes. Max did quite well coming 5th on the junior course. Colin didn't do too great coming 14th in the Male Vets after a very bad last course.

Sunday, November 25, 2007

Harp and Hill

A relatively quiet weekend. Max had a day of harping on Saturday and we all walked up Arthurs Seat in Sunday morning.

Sunday, November 18, 2007

Footie etc

Hannah started the weekend with a narrow victory against local rivals Sciennes PS. Final score was 3 - 2 we think. Max then tried out his first light green course at East Craiglockhart Hill. A good performance getting round in just over 50 minutes.

On Sunday Colin took Hannah to the climbing wall at Ratho. She did very well getting to the top of a Grade 4 climb and then doing a very tall wall.

Tinto

Colin and Max traveled down to Tinto for the last big hill race of the season. Colin was pleased with his run coming 151 out of 248 in a time of 46 minutes. Max struggled in the fun run - not sure what went wrong - probably set off too fast and ran out of breath.

SOL 7 Altarstone

Gave Max a week off the orienteering and went off to Altarstone forest by Stobo. Pretended to be a 21 year old and did the longest course taking over 2 hrs 17 minutes. Navigation really tough at the start but gradually got into the rhythm. Came 5th of 6 runners (the runner behind getting lost rather than going slower!)

Hannah and her team were out playing against South Morningside in the morning and had a great 6 - 2 victory.

Cademuir SOSOL

Max and Colin headed off to Peebles for orienteering at Cademuir forest and hill. Another larger open moorland event with a lot of steep climbing. Max had a good run in 6th place on orange and Colin did well coming 9th on Brown.

Max collected his certificate for winning the 2006/2007 SOSOL Orange course league.

SOSOL 1

On Saturday we went out to the Botanic Gardens. Colin, Max and Hannah cycled there and back whilst Cherry walked and bussed. Had some pizza at Pizza express before a look round the gardens. Saw the new Queen Mum memorial garden for the first time.

On Sunday we went to a cold windy hillside near Bridge of Earn for the first SOSOL of the season. The parking proved exciting with some very dodgy tracks to navigate. Max had a good run coming in 4th place of 10 on the orange course. Colin was pleased with his 19th place on Brown with no big mistakes.

On the way back we stopped at East Wemyss on the Fife coastline to search for fossils. Found lots of little black marks in the rocks which might well once had been living creatures.

Blackness Castle

Went out to Blackness Castle on the Firth of Forth. Quite good. Then went for lunch at Cafe Rouge and bought some books at Waterstones.

Orienteering at Bush Estate

We all went out to the Bush estate at the edge of Edinburgh to go orienteering. This is a newly mapped area that is a bio science park. Colin and Max ran whilst Cherry and Hannah went for a walk.

Max came 6th of 18 runners (all adults!). Colin came 20th of 38.

Pentland Skyline

A really tough race especially in the unseasonally warm and sunny weather. Had a pretty good first half of the race although the time didn't seem particularly good. The second half was really draining and got blisters on the feet which made running painful.

Got round the 16 miles and 6200 ft of ascent in just over 4 hrs and came 96th of 124 finishers.

Sunday, September 30, 2007

SOL 6 - Dumyat

Max and Colin headed off to Stirling for a Scottish O League event. Max did well on the Orange course getting round in just over 40 minutes. Colin struggled in his new shoes and gave up with blisters.

JGPS 4 Sciennes 3

Hannah had a great victory against Sciennes Primary School on Saturday morning. Well done Hannah !

Saturday, September 22, 2007

Two Breweries

Colin was out on Saturday for the very long and arduous race between Traquair and Broughton in the Scottish border. Very tough conditions underfoot with lots of heather to push through and not a lot of path. A pretty good time of 4 hrs 39 minutes coming in ahead of quite a few good runners.

Wednesday, September 19, 2007

Caerketton Downhill Race

We all headed off to the Pentlands on a gloriously sunny evening. A hard slog up the hill to the race start.

Max and Hannah did very well on the junior race. Max came 5th in 4 mins 19 taking 33 seconds off his time last year. Hannah came 7th in 4 mins 33, more than a minute better than last year.

Colin was a bit slow down the hill coming near the back of the pack.

Jamie Stevenson Trophy

Max took part at the JST at Pitlochry. He ran exceptionally well to get round the orange course in 25 minutes coming 9th of 16. The Interlopers team did quite well coming 7th of 13.

Stopped off at the amusement park on the way back.

White Rose

Max and Colin drove off to Yorkshire for the weekend for a holiday weekend of orienteering (although we don't get a holiday monday in Scotland !). We tried out the new micro mountain marathon tent which worked fine although it was by far the smallest tent in the field. The sun shone all weekend and the campsite was very pleasant. Max did well on his orienteering courses. Colin is in need of practice! Had fun at the Night O with fabulous views across some fine Yorkshire ridges and cliffs. Pickering was also very nice - with a great steam railway and old world railway station.

Saturday, August 18, 2007

CATI Orienteering - Blackford

Max and Colin went out orienteering for the first time in quite a while. Max got round the Orange course in 30 minutes coming 4th of 11. Colin did the untimed training course.

Marble Arch Caves

A long drive back from Kerry to the boat. On the way we stopped at the Marble Arch Caves. The recent rains meant that we didn't get to go on the boat journey through the caves but still enjoyed an interesting guided tour.

Friday, August 10, 2007

We got some real Irish weather for our last day with constant rainfall all day. We travelled to Muckross just outside Killarney and went round the gardens but not the house and then did a tour outdoor agricultural museum. Hannah fell in love with the two 6 week old kittens, Socks and Tabby

Thursday, August 09, 2007

The weather broke with a vengeance on thursday with visibility down to yards on the drive to Glebgariff. It finally cleared up after lunch and we took a boat to Garanish Island to see some wonderful gardens that had been created on the island. A highlight of the holiday was when a pod of dolphins swam by the boat and treated us to some fantastic leaps just metres from us. On the way back we stopped at a hand-made chocolate factory and shop and bought some absolutely wonderful chocs.

Eyries

Stuck close to home for a walk along the coastline at a little village called Eyries. It was quite pleasant although I do prefer a walk with some hilltops on the route. A few stops to play at pebbly beaches.

Valencia Island

Went for a long long drive round part of the Ring of Kerry from Kenmare round to Valencia Island. We tried to to a trip to the Skellig islands but found that the boats were all booked out days in advance. Spent some time on the beach at Waterville and stopped at Sweem in both directions for food. The scenery was absolutely stunning and the weather fabulous.

Monday, August 06, 2007

Killarney

Headed off the Kenmare in the morning and had a stroll around the very pretty town. As the weather was starting to turn we decided to head for Killarney where we spent the day around town and walking in the park. In the evening we went to see Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix at the cinema.

Views from the House

Glen Inchiquin

After the long journey the previous day we stayed close to home touring the local area in the morning. We visited Dereen gardens with its lush sub-tropical vegetation. Enjoyed mussels and chips in the local pub for lunch. In the afternoon we went to Glen Inchiquin which had a fantastic waterfall. Colin and Max did a walk that took us up to the top of the falls with views of the valley beyond. Cherry and Hannah stayed on the low ground and enjoyed the river walk and watching the local kids throw themselves down the canyon.

Arrival at Kerry

We got up for the long drive to Kerry. The first couple of hours to Limerick went quickly with little traffic on the road. After a snack and some shopping we headed onwards but the traffic the rest of the journey was absolutely dreadful with long tailbacks into almost every town the main road passed through. We made it to the house by about 6 pm. The cottage was lovely, sitting perched above the Kenmare estuary with grand views across the sea and the mountains beyond. The interior was nicely furnished and unlike the previous house was a lived in property where a little care and attention had been taken to ensure everything work just right.

Russborough House

Went to Russborough house for a very interesting and informative guided tour which the children really enjoyed. They loved finding out about where all the furniture came from and who made it. They were really disappointed when the tour ended as they would have liked to have gone to every room in the house...

NOT!!!!

Dublin

We got up early for a bus ride into central Dublin. We went on a long walk round the main sites of the city. We started at O'Connell street and the General Post Office and the new spire that has been built at the centre of the street. We walked through the Temple Bar area after crossing the Ha'Penny Bridge. We then went past Christ Church Cathedral and to the Dublinia exhibition about Dublin in Medieval and Viking times. We then went to Dublin Castle, Poiwerscourt shopping centre and on for a rest at St Stephens Green. We went to the National Gallery and then through Trinity College before making it back to the bus stop at around 5 pm for the trip home.

Great Sugar Loaf Mountain

We started the day at the Great Sugar Loaf mountain which involved around 40 minutes climb to the summit. It was a rocky and challenging little climb that Hannah managed very well. We then went to Powerscourt House and enjoyed a nice walk round the majestic gardens.

Blessington Lakeshore

Spent the day at the house. In the morning we went for a cayak on the lake. Went for just an hour but amazing how tiring it can be out on the water, We played tennis in the afternoon with Max and Hannah gaining a nail biting 8-6 victory over Colin. In the evening we went out for dinner at the Hollywood Inn. Hannah through dogged persistence got a special treat of a bar of chocolate from the restaurant staff.

Monday, July 30, 2007

Glendalough

Drove through the Gap of Wicklow and on to Glendalough which was a very scenic valley where Saint Kevin had lived in the 6th Century. We saw the monastic village and other old ruins and two lovely lakes. Spotted heron, grasshopper and dragonfly. Very nice walk.

Irish National Stud

Went to the National Stud by Kildare. Didn't see very many horses but the gardens were very beautiful. There as a Japanese garden and a more Irish themed garden with wonderful limestone rock around several small lakes.

Went into Kildare for a look at the cathedral and tower. Not a very impressive town although Hannah enjoyed the playground.

Back at the house we played a short game of tennis and then went for a swim.

Football

Spent an energetic morning playing football with Michaelangelo at Maxwell and Rosemary's house. WE WON! (By Max ) before heading off on the long drive to Blessington. We stopped at Banville House on the way down for a nice lunch. There were very bad traffic jams all around Dublin with lots of roadwoks being carried out. The house was fairly comfortable but suffered from being somewhere that no-one had actually lived in and fixed all the little things which make a house a home. The estate was quite nice with a tennis court and boating area beside the lake. Went into Blessington for a pizza for tea.

Castle Espie

While Colin was in London for the day Cherry, Max and Hannah went to see the wildfowl at Castle Espie.

Romano Bridge

Colin was out in the hills in torrential rain in the Borders for the 4th Carnethy handicap race of the summer. A very long course with lots of challenging navigation. Came a very respectable 5th place. I suspect quite a few of the early starters must have got lost along the way.

The Golden Compass

Looking forward to the film

Orienteering at Cammo

Went to a come and try it orienteering at Cammo on Saturday. We managed to get Hannah out again and she made it round the yellow course. Colin raced round the Orange (4th of 30) whilst Max was slow but sure on the same course.

When to Hopetoun garden centre afterwards and bought some new plants for the front garden.

Colin, Max and Hannah played tennis on Sunday morning and Colin went for a nice long run in the Pentlands in the afternoon.

Thursday, July 12, 2007

Carnethy Hill Race

A family outing to the Pentlands on a lovely evening. Max and Hannah ran in a tough junior race which took them up a small hill and back. Best of all there was a small river to run through! Max came third and Hannah 4th. Colin ran OK but with a tougher than usual competition came in 20th of 28 runners. Great views from the peak of Carnethy across the Lothians.

Sunday, July 08, 2007

Pentland Walk

We all went out for a short walk around Harlaw and Threpmuir lakes at the edge of the Pentlands. The sun came out for part of the time and we almost had a picnic before running to the car for shelter. Went to Malleny gardens after lunch.

Pictures & Caches

Headed out on a rainy Sunday to Aberfeldy to buy a picture. We did some geocaching en-route stopping at Bankfoot and then in Aberfeldy to find two micro caches. Then bought a Jim Wylie painting "Sma Glen" at the gallery.

On the way back we stopped at Loch of Lowes to look at the osprey. They were two well with two healthy chicks. Saw the adults in flight and standing guard at the nest. Lots of siskin and woodpecker at the "window".

Very slow journey on the way back thanks to roadworks and flooding.
